Briahanna Rolle will not be tried as adult in stabbing of classmate

Rolle, 17, accepts plea deal, pleads guilty to aggravated battery

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ A 17-year-old girl accused of stabbing a football player at Miami Killian Senior High School earlier this year accepted a plea deal Tuesday and will not be charged as an adult.

As part of the plea deal, Briahanna Rolle pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery with great bodily harm and will remain under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

She will also be placed in a maximum-risk residential program, where she will have the opportunity to finish her education and be treated for mental illness.

Rolle told Judge Angelica Zayas that she is taking medication to treat schizophrenia.

"The medicine you took today, does it keep you from understanding what's happening today?" Zayas asked.

"No," Rolle said.

"Do you understand what's happening today?" Zayas asked.

"Yes, ma'am," Rolle said.

According to police, Rolle stabbed DeAndre Johnson, 15, in the chest in March. The incident happened just before lunchtime outside the school cafeteria.

Police said Johnson's friend applied pressure to his wound while waiting for help to arrive. He later underwent surgery to repair a pierced lung and artery.

According to an arrest report, Rolle also had weapons in her book bag, including two kitchen knives and a large fork used for grilling.Ā

The Johnson's attorney said the family was content with the plea deal.

"Michelle Johnson was in court and she gave her blessing to the plea," Judd Rosen said. "She's very pleased that at least this young woman is accepting responsibility."

But Rosen said the family feels there are still issues at hand, and believe the school board needs to do more to prevent something like this from happening again.

"It wasn't a random act of violence," Judd said. "They knew this girl had problems and she was going to be a ticking time bomb, and they're ducking and dodging their responsibility right now."Ā  Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

Rolle has been ordered to not have contact with Johnson.
