BSO: Makeda Elliott's neck grazed by bullet

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – A teenage girl was shot near Watkins Elementary School in Pembroke Park Friday morning, according to authorities.

On Friday afternoon, the Broward Sheriff's Office identified the teen as 17-year-old Makeda Elliott.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said they received a call about 6:40 a.m. saying a teen had been shot near Southwest 52nd Avenue, south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Deputies said the elementary school had not yet opened for the school day at the time of the incident.

Elliott, a student at Hallandale Beach High School, was walking to the bus stop where about a dozen other students were standing, according to BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion. Several shots were fired, and one grazed her neck.

"I just heard shots," said Cyrus Whitelock.

Elliott was able to call her father, who rushed her to Jackson North Medical Center in Dade County, and then to Ryder Trauma Center. She was treated and released.

Deputies said no one else was injured in the incident.

Anyone who was in the area or has any information about the shooting is asked to call BSO Violent Crimes Det. Timothy Metz at 954-321-4224 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477). Deputies said a reward of up to $3,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.
