MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A woman visited a cemetery Wednesday to leave flowers at her husband's grave, but her visit was ruined when someone broke into her daughter's vehicle.
The incident was reported at the Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Park Cemetery off Southwest 116th Street and 117th Avenue in Miami-Dade County.
Maritza Lopez told Local 10 News reporter Carlos Suarez that her ailing mother had left her purse in the backseat of her car as they visited her father's grave.
"I never thought something like this could happen here," Lopez's mother, Hilda Lopez, said.
The 84-year-old woman told Local 10 that she was about five minutes walking distance from the vehicle when she heard a noise.
When the women returned to their car, they found that someone had smashed their window and took Hilda's purse, passport and medications.
Hilda Lopez, who lives in New Jersey, was scheduled to fly home on Thursday after spending two weeks with her family in South Florida.
"She had $540 in her purse," Maritza Lopez said. "She had her ID. She had her passport. She had the airline tickets there, too. She was supposed to leave tomorrow."
The women said two workers at the cemetery told them that cars have been broken into in the past, but said they didn't see anyone near their car.
Maritza Lopez said her sister's car also had been broken into recently while visiting her father's grave.
Suarez was told that the cemetery only has surveillance cameras at its entrance.
