Tire shop owner shoots man who was asked to leave store, police say

Owner detained for questioning

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ A tire shop owner is being questioned by detectives after shooting a man inside the Fort Lauderdale business, authorities said.

The shooting was reported Monday afternoon at Tire 1 on Broward Boulevard near Northwest Eighth Avenue.

Fort Lauderdale police said the man was asked to leave and a verbal dispute escalated, ending with the owner shooting the man in the leg.

Police said the man ran away from the store and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The store owner was detained for questioning, police said.

According to a friend of the store owner, the victim came inside the business wanting to put air in the tires of his bicycle.

Numerous signs around the business advise customers that they do not offer air for bicycles.

"No air for bikes ā€¦ Seriously. So don't even ask!!" one sign read.

The friend said the victim became obnoxious and began causing a scene and harassing the owner. He said it came to the point where the owner was forced to shoot at the man.

It's unclear whether the owner will face charges.
