Severe thunderstorm sweeps through Broward County

Cellphone video shows funnel cloud in Pembroke Pines

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning and a severe thunderstorm warning Monday evening for southeastern Broward County, and more severe weather remained a possibility Tuesday.

A funnel cloud formed near Sheridan Street and Flamingo Road and caused dangerous driving conditions.

Although there were no reports of any tornadoes touching down, several streetlights were out along Pines Boulevard during the storm.

Florida Power & Light officials said that about 1,300 customers were without power as a result of the storm.

"Right when it happened, (there were) a bunch of lightning strikes. Actually, quite several lightning strikes," Felipe Hernandez said about the storm.

Hernandez was eating at Segafredo Zanetti in Pembroke Pines when the power went out.

"Everybody's phone went off right at the same time, the alert for the tornado thing," he said. "I mean, pretty much, it was a little bit scary."

The power went out at the Shops at Pembroke Gardens at about 6:30 p.m.

Shop owners said there was a loud thunder clap before the lights went off.

Power was later restored to the area.

Heavy rain and hail were also reported in the affected areas.

Local 10 News viewers submitted videos and photos of heavy rain and winds.

More storms are expected in South Florida for the rest of the week.
