OPA-LOCKA, Fla. -

The parents of Trayvon Martin gave away backpacks and back-to-school supplies to students Friday.

The Trayvon Martin Foundation event was held at Hanan's Academic Development Center in Opa-Locka. Sybrina Fulton and Tracey Martin helped distribute the backpacks to about 200 students.

"We've always said it's about the future," said Martin. "We just want to let everybody know we appreciate them for standing by us."

"We want to give back to the kids. We want to give back to the community," added Fulton.

Martin's parents said they are trying to help the family of Tequila Forshee pay for her burial. Forshee, 12, was shot and killed inside her Miami Gardens home late Wednesday.

Jurors acquitted George Zimmerman of second-degree murder in Martin's death last month.
