Driver runs over several joggers near Pelican Harbor Park

Driver told police he fell asleep on the wheel

MIAMI – A driver hit several people who were jogging near the Pelican Harbor Park in Miami Saturday morning, police said.

The victims were running westbound on the 79th Street Causeway when the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox sports utility vehicle allegedly fell asleep on the wheel, police said.

"Two joggers were airlifted and the 79th Street Causeway was closed," Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll, Jr. said.

The runners were part of a group, but stayed behind to drink water, so they were further behind from the rest when the driver ran them over, witnesses said.  The joggers were at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, Carroll said.

The driver was in police custody due to a suspended license, police said.  He was traveling with his girlfriend and an eight-month old baby in the car. They were not injured. The car came to a stop after he hit a pole.

The 79th Street Causeway was closed until 11:15 a.m.
