2 officers treated for head injuries after fight with suspect

Suspect dies at hospital

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Two police officers called to a domestic disturbance in southwest Miami-Dade County late Thursday night were injured during a fight with the suspect, who later died, police said Friday.

The officers arrived at the Caribbean West Apartments off Southwest 202nd Street shortly after 11 p.m.

An armed suspect refused to comply with officers orders and began to run, police said.

A foot chase ensued and, when the officers caught up to the man, he resisted arrest.

"The officer, he was, like, badly injured," witness Corey Bennett told Local 10. "I think he had blood coming from the back of his head."

Bennett captured the scuffle on his cellphone.

One of the police officers used a Taser gun to subdue the suspect, police said.

"It didn't even do nothing," witness Jerwaune Johnson said.

The struggle left the suspect and two police officers injured.

Both officers were taken to Jackson South Community Hospital. Police said the officers suffered head injuries.

The suspect, identified as Maykel Barrera, 39, died at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
