2 underground gas tank leaks reported in Broward County

Authorities: 500-pound tank had rusted or broken pressure relief valve

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue officials and hazmat teams are working to stop a gas leak at a Deerfield Beach home and at a Lauderdale Lakes apartment building.

Authorities were called to the home at 707 NW 15 Ave. just after 9 a.m. after reports of a 500-pound underground LP gas tank that was leaking.

Authorities said the resident had recently had the underground tank refilled and said he heard a "hissing sound" from the leak before he called for help.

The hazmat crew determined the tank is leaking due to a rusted or broken pressure relief valve.

Authorities are conducting a monitored burn-off of the fuel, which is estimated to be 75 percent of what was inside the large tank.

Another gas leak was reported in Lauderdale Lakes at an apartment complex at 4850 NW 29 Court. In that case, the leak came from a 250-pound underground tank.

No injuries or evacuations were reported in either case.
