Video released of 2013 Miami-Dade police-involved shooting

Officer fatally shoots suspect after gas station stabbing

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Newly released video shows an attack on a Miami-Dade police officer at a gas station in 2013 that led the officer to fatally shoot the suspect.

The incident was reported in October 2013 at a Shell gas station at 2501 NW 42nd Ave.

Detectives said Officer Mario Gutierrez was patrolling near Miami International Airport when he saw a suspicious man, identified as Dominique Jean, 51.

Surveillance video from the gas station shows Jean lifting the cap off an underground gas tank and setting fire to newspapers in an effort to set the gas station on fire.

The video shows Gutierrez approaching Jean and pressing the gas station's emergency shut-off button. Gutierrez was then stabbed repeatedly with a knife and a large screwdriver.

Although seriously injured, Gutierrez was able to grab his gun and shoot Jean.

"All I thought about was, he's not going to kill me. I'm going to win, because I want to see my family," Gutierrez said earlier this year as he was presented with the prestigious congressional badge of bravery for his quick thinking and selfless behavior.

Police said Gutierrez tried radioing for help four times during the attack, but his radio didn't work properly. He suffered wounds to his arm, leg, back and chest. Jean also tried to bite off Gutierrez's thumb, police said.

Jean, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was later found to be in possession of box cutters, in addition to the knife and screwdriver with which he attacked the officer.

Gutierrez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent several surgical procedures.

Gutierrez has worked for the department for about 23 years and was assigned to the Motors Unit at the Airport District at the time of the attack.
