Video shows 2 who stole dog

1-year-old Belgian Malinois was stolen from shelter, Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department says

MEDLEY, Fla. – Surveillance video showed two people walk in to the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department shelter, where they stole Django, a 1-year-old Belgian Malinois.

According to the department, the dog was stolen from the shelter on Tuesday, May 14.

"We had it (Django) here for about three hours or little less than three hours before it was stolen," said Luis Salgado with Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department.

Surveillance video captured the dognapping duo as they made their getaway through a restricted access exit.

"When he went in with the yellow shirt, you never saw him come back out. He must have gone out through the back where we don't have cameras," said Salgado.

About an hour later, the same man, wearing different clothes, walked out of the shelter with the dog.

"They spent about 20 minutes playing with the dog and interacting with the dog when they were originally in here," said Salgado.

Django was turned in as a stray earlier in the day.

"We want to know where the dog is going and make sure it's going to a good family and we want to keep track of the animal," added Salgado. "That's why we have a database with all the information of who is adopting, where it's going, and what condition it's going to be in."

Anyone with information related to the identity of the individuals or the current location of the dog is encouraged to contact the Animal Services Investigations Unit at 305-418-7172.
