Video shows moment school bus crashed, injuring students

5 students injured in February crash

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – A camera captured the moment when a Broward County school bus with 18 West Broward High School students on board went off the road in February.

The video showed some of the students falling out of their seats, landing in the middle aisle, as the bus went into a line of trees before stopping on a fence. The video also showed the bus driver get up and check on everyone.

"I think the bus driver probably saved those kids from a lot of injuries," parent Melissa Huse said.

Broward County Public Schools officials began an investigation after the incident.

Police said another driver was heading west on Griffin Road, swerved into the eastbound lane and caused the bus to swerve.

Huse said her son was one of five students hurt in the accident. Justin Huse, 17, was on his way home when the bus swerved to avoid another car. He had to be transported to the hospital. He was feeling dizzy, and he was in pain.

"When I arrived, he was on the gurney, and they had the neck brace on him," Melissa Huse said.

Four of the students were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Melissa Huse said this really could have been so much worse.

The bus driver wasn't cited in the incident. The bus driver avoided a full head-on collision. The other driver was cited and wasn't seriously hurt.
