Volunteers give South Miami school a makeover

Dozens work on gardening and painting to improve students' second home in South Miami

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – South Miami Middle Community School students walked into a prettier school Monday.

The school, 6750 SW 60th St., had about 10,000 in greenery -- 750 new plants, 15 pallets of grass. There were also some coats of fresh paint and carpentry work. About 200 volunteers from Christ Journey Church worked at the school Saturday.

"It's who we [church members] are  and what we do," Chris Lane, the organizer of the event, said.

Santa Barbara Nursery, 20425 SW 177th Ave., donated and sold some of the greenery to the church at cost. South Miami Middle cheerleaders also participated in the effort.
