WASHINGTON – There was a frantic push Thursday in Washington to vote on a health care repeal bill, with chaos from overnight stretching into the afternoon.
In the end, the GOP health care plan hit a wall and the vote was postponed.
"I was a no, I am a no, and I will vote no," Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtnen said.
There were signs of progress among conservative opponents, but changes to satisfy the right jeopardized moderate support from those like Ros-Lehtnen.
When she was asked if House Speaker Paul Ryan or President Donald Trump could do anything to change her mind, Ros-Lethnen didn't seem hopeful.
"Well, they've invited me to go bowling, but that's not going to change my mind," she said.
She wasn't alone.
At least 30-Republicans were expected to vote no on the bill, which would have been enough to kill the bill in the House.
Opponents were demanding major changes to the bill, which included lower premiums.
Not a single Democrat was expected to vote in favor of the bill passing.
"It's very unclear what's going to happen," Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz said. "(There are) 1.7 million people (who) would lose health care in Florida and then, on top of that, we have the grave harm that will come to our seniors."
Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have been working the phones, making in-person pitches for the bill, which turned out not to be enough.
