LAND O' LAKES, Fla. – A hole estimated at 200 feet in diameter swallowed one home and part of another Friday morning in a Florida neighborhood.
Pasco County public safety official Kevin Guthrey said authorities received a 911 call at 7:21 a.m. about a small depression under a boat at a home at 21825 Ocean Pines Drive in Lank O' Lakes. Within minutes, the hole had grown and swallowed the boat before also swallowing the home, Guthrey said.
A short time later, the hole swallowed another home nearby and a pool just after 11:30 a.m., officials said.
Guthrey said 11 homes had been evacuated, but no one was injured. Pasco County Fire Rescue personnel also removed two dogs from one of the homes.
Officials said the 200-foot wide hole is believed to be about 50 feet deep and is still growing.
Volunteers and deputies have secured the area and urged people to stay away from it. People who live in nearby homes must have proof of address to be let through, the Sheriff's Office said.
Guthrey said officials plan to shut down boating traffic in a nearby lake, as the hole is growing toward it.
As of 12:30 p.m., 100 homes in the neighborhood were without power, deputies said.
It's not known what caused the hole to form, but Guthrey said there was a sinkhole reported at one of the homes in the past.
Emergency management officials are still at the scene and the Red Cross is assisting.
