Water main break closes plaza in Cutler Bay

12-inch water break corroded, city officials say

CUTLER BAY, Fla. – A shopping plaza off South Dixie Highway and Marlin Road was closed Thursday morning because of a water main break in Cutler Bay.

City officials said a 12-inch water break corroded naturally, causing the plaza's parking lot to be shut down.

Water gushed out of the pipe for more than three hours and the water main break caused a small sinkhole.

Authorities said the water flooded nearby stores and caused some restaurants to close its doors as crews make repairs.

"Feeling bad because the business is open to make money ... at this time you can't do anything," IHOP manager Belcy Roque said.

A boil water notice was issued for the businesses until Saturday once the water is restored between 188th and 192nd streets.

Water has been shut off at the plaza and will return once repairs are made.

No homes have been impacted.
