DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A roll of cash and a pair of earrings found on a corpse at the Broward County morgue are missing, and the doctor who found the items is no longer working at the medical examiner's office, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office report.
Medical students from Nova Southeastern University were examining the body of Cedrick Camper, 41, when one of them noticed a bulge protruding from the dead man's sock.
Dr. Michael Steckbauer looked inside the sock and discovered $500 in cash. Also found on the body was a pair of earrings.
According to the incident report, the discovery came as a concern to Steckbauer because, he said, police typically remove all personal property before a body is delivered to the morgue.
Steckbauer placed the cash and earrings inside a sealed envelope and signed it. Later that afternoon, however, Steckbauer noticed that the envelope was missing.

The BSO was notified and began an investigation. According to the report, the staff members and medical students cooperated, except for one student who said "she was at home and was not coming back."
Surveillance cameras are located throughout the premises, but not in the morgue, and an X-ray of the body yielded the same result, the report said.
When the deputy who filed the report contacted Steckbauer in June to see if he had any new information about the missing envelope, Steckbauer told him that he had been "relieved of work services" the next day.
According to the report, Steckbauer said "employees advised him that this was potentially an inside job to set Dr. Stockbauer (sic) up for termination purposes."
BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said Monday that the investigation remains open.
