Anish D. John, who was a West Broward High School drum technician for the school's band, drowned in a pool during a party Saturday. He was 28.
John, of Davie, was a guest at 264 Codrington Drive, in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Police said some one saw him jump into the pool. He did not know how swim. And about 8:52 a.m., party-goers found his body.
"It is unclear why John jumped into the pool and why he couldn't make it to the surface of the water," Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella said in a press release.
Authorities said he was under water for several minutes before party-goers pulled his body out of the pool, and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Fire Rescue took John to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
On Sunday, friends, family and West Broward High School students mourned the loss on his Facebook wall.
"You made it to Drum Corps, then went beyond that," posted Marco Antonio Madrazo on Facebook. "You started passing down your passion and your knowledge to younger kids and left a legacy."
On Twitter, students spread the news of his death.
John earned a bachelor's at University of Central Florida, after attending Florida International University, he posted on Facebook. He graduated from Western High School in 2003.
His death remains under investigation. Family and friends met for a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday, 14585 Shotgun Road, in Davie.
