Miami police said Joimelus fatally struck his mother with a hammer last month at his home on Northwest Second Court. She was pronounced dead Saturday after more than a month at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The attending physician at the hospital said she died of a subdural hematoma.

An autopsy was conducted by the Miami-Dade County medical examiner's office, which determined her cause of death to be a homicide.

According to the police report, Joimelus told police that he took a hammer from his bedroom and used it to hit her once on the head. He told police "that he was hearing voices and the voices told him to do it."

After hitting his mother, Joimelus told police that he placed the hammer on a chair at the dinner table, the report said.

Joimelus was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
