Witness chases driver that struck, killed woman

Miami hit-and-run accident claims mother's life

MIAMI – A driver who ran over a woman with his car in the early hours of Thursday allegedly didn't stop, but a witness who saw the accident followed the man and convinced him to return to the scene.

The victim, Nancy Gomez, 49, was crossing S.W. 8th St., just west of 42nd Avenue, in Miami. The driver was later identified as Robert Vivas, 26. Miami police said Vivas was behind the wheel of a 2002 gold Hyundai when he allegedly hit Gomez, then sped away.

Police said a witness saw the incident and followed Vivas and was able to stop him. After some convincing, Vivas returned to the scene.

Family members told Local 10 that Gomez was on her way to get money from an automated teller machine.

"He never stopped to see if she was OK," said Jorge Gomez, the victim's son, about the driver.

Surveillance video at a nearby business captured the hit-and-run accident on camera.

Gomez was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center where she was pronounced dead.

Vivas remains in jail; he was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death.

Gomez's children say they "owe the world" to the witness who chased after Vivas.
