Woman, 60, fatally struck while crossing street in Miami-Dade County

FHP: Driver strikes woman who attempted to cross State Road 994

MIAMI-DADE, Fla. ā€“ A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a driver while attempting to cross the street in Miami-Dade County, troopers said.

The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. Friday in the westbound lanes of State Road 994 west of Southwest 115th Avenue.

Elijah Bell, 49, was traveling west in his minivan in the outside travel lane of the westbound lanes of S.R. 994.

Troopers said Effie Lee Atkins, 60, was attempting to cross S.R. 994 -- not at an intersection or marked crosswalk -- from the south side of the roadway walking toward the north when she was struck by the left-front corner of Bell's minivan.

Bell's minivan came to a stop in the outside travel lane of S.R. 994 facing west. After being struck Atkins came to a stop in the inside travel lane of the westbound lanes of S.R. 994, south of Bell's minivan, troopers said.

Atkins was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where she later died, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said charges are pending as the investigation continues.
