Woman, 35, arrested on grand theft charge

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A woman was arrested on a grand theft charge Wednesday after stealing more than $3,000 from a middle school's band fund, police said.

According to an arrest report, Elizabeth Monzon, 35, was a volunteer and adviser of the Driftwood Middle School Band Patrons Association, Inc, a nonprofit organization that is "exclusively for charitable educational purposes."

Police said Monzon was responsible for fundraising activities and had access to the association's TD Bank account.

Monzon is accused of opening a Visa business debit card without the association's consent, and using it to make unauthorized purchases and withdrawals from 11 ATMs.

Police said Monzon confessed to taking the money without permission, including using the card to pay her personal Comcast bill of $273.94.

Detectives said Monzon claimed that she meant to pay back the money and said most of the money was to pay for a van for the association. Detectives said Monzon has not provided documentation to substantiate those claims and no one at the association is aware of a van purchase.

Investigators said Monzon was quick to point out that she deposited money twice into the account. Once was Jan. 30 for $500, and another $500 was deposited Feb. 3.
