Woman speaks about son's recovery after he was struck by Miami police cruiser

Officer Erven Ford II remains on the job after February incident

MIAMI – The mother of a 6-year-old boy who was struck by a Miami police car earlier this year spoke to Local 10 News Friday.

Dramatic cellphone video shows the state of panic the Little Haiti neighborhood was in Feb. 3 moments after Antwan Lawson was hit by a police cruiser while riding his scooter.

"Everyone was panicking and stuff, but you know, I was trying to not panic because I was with him like in his face," Antwan's mother, Janet Martinez, said. "He was looking at me and I didn't want him to feel like he wasn't going to make it."

Antwan suffered several broken bones and it's been a struggle, but there's no doubt he did make it.

It's hard to believe just two months ago the 6-year-old left the hospital in a full body cast. This week, he started school again.

"He wasn't able to do anything on his own. Basically he was a baby again," Martinez said.

Martinez said Antwan is about 85 percent recovered, pointing out that he walks with a limp, which is something doctors think will correct itself over time.

Meanwhile, Martinez questions the Miami Police Department's actions after the incident.

"I just feel like it's just a bunch of covering up," she said.

Martinez said no one from the police department addressed the incident with her.

"You didn't even try to reach out and say you're sorry or show your sympathy – nothing -- so it's like you don't even care," she said.

Several witnesses claimed the officer was speeding, but authorities said speed did not appear to be a factor.

According to a report, Erven Ford II is the Miami Police officer who was behind the wheel of the car.

A Miami police representative said the investigation is closed, but right now they are not able to comment further pending a civil lawsuit.

Ford was never suspended and is still on the job.
