MIAMI – A Miami woman's duplex caught fire Thursday on her birthday.
Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll Jr. said the fire was reported Thursday morning at a duplex at 352 NW 64th St.
"We were sitting on the bed (and the) next thing you know, I saw fire shooting up the wall," Tracy Morrison said.
Morrison's duplex sustained substantial damage from the flames, but everyone got out safely.
Morrison's mother and stepfather were transported to a hospital as a precaution with symptoms of smoke inhalation, but she thinks they will be fine.
"You look at stuff on the news and you are like, 'Eh,' but when you actually get in that predicament, it is kind of crazy," Morrison said.
After firefighters arrived, they noticed no one came out of the unit next door and it appeared no one was home.
"We don't take any chances, so we started banging on the door," Carroll said. "At that time, a 14-year-old came to the door and we saw there was smoke inside that unit."
Authorities said another teen and two children were sleeping inside and the smoke detectors were not working.
Thankfully, everyone made it out safely with no injuries.
Morrison thinks the fire might have started from a window AC unit, but fire investigators will determine the cause.
Meanwhile, she said she is just happy to be alive another year.
