Worker dies after failing to surface from water-filled ditch in Weston

OSHA, BSO homicide detectives investigating

WESTON, Fla. – A worker is dead after failing to surface from a water-filled ditch at a construction site in Weston.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella said the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at a construction site near Indian Trace and Bonaventure Boulevard.

Ernesto Rodriguez, 45, of Hialeah, was pronounced dead at the Cleveland Clinic, a short time after a co-worker pulled him out of the water.

Moschella said Rodriguez was working on an underwater pipe and didn't resurface. A co-worker jumped in to try to rescue him, but he couldn't find Rodriguez. Eventually, he found Rodriguez and pulled him out.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and BSO homicide detectives are investigating.
