World War II veteran continues to serve community

Sydney Hecker took part in invasion of Normandy 70 years ago

TAMARAC, Fla. – It's been more than 70 years since Sydney Hecker was part of the invasion of Normandy during World War II, and he still remembers the details from his time overseas

He served three years in the United States Army, receiving five battle stars before being honorably discharged. He looks back on his time in the service with pride saying, "I'm glad I did it. At the time it occurred, there was a great need for it. I'm glad I served my country."

Hecker now lives in Tamarac with Lauren, his wife of 64 years. They stay active by playing cards and celebrating family milestones.

Having already served his country, Hecker continues to serve his community as well. He is part of the Knights of Pythias organization, where he helps raise money for children's hospitals throughout the state.

Hecker has received several awards for his service, most recently the Legion of Honor medal from France.

At 90 years young, he looks back on his life so far and knows there's still more to accomplish saying, "My motto has always been that you are never too old to do what you have to do."
