BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -

Eighteen World War II veterans are being honored in South Florida.

The French Consul General is bestowing the Legion of Honor award to the men in a ceremony Thursday at the Boynton Beach Civic Center.

The French government has been honoring veterans across the U.S. in recent years to honor their contributions to gaining peace in Europe.

The Legion of Honor was established by Napoleon Bonaparte and is France's highest honor.

Notable Americans have also been given the medal over the years, including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
