World War II vets honored for support of Miami Youth Sailing program

MIAMI – The mayor of Miami and city commissioners honored two World World II veterans at a ceremony at city hall on Tuesday for their support of Miami's Youth Sailing program.

Mayor Tomas Regalado attended the ceremony to present a proclamation in their names, establishing a legacy for both their service to the city and, more importantly, the sacrifices they made for our freedom.

"This is to honor these 90-something-years-old veterans," Regalado said. "They participated in the most important battles in World War II and it's fitting that we do this in this historic place and the city recognizes these two gentlemen."

With almost a century under their belts, the veterans still look back at their time in the armed forces.

"I just wish our warriors could be here with us," veteran Taylor Larimore said.

As they hold on to their memories, they said they hope the next generation will take their legacy and move it forward.

"I would say keep sailing," veteran John Moynahan said.

Each of the veterans received a copy of the proclamation. The trophy they received during the ceremony will be held at Miami's Sailing Club and will be awarded at a race that will take place this weekend.
