WPLG Editorial: Take-Home Cars Abusive Waste Of Public Money (10/16/11)

MIAMI ā€“ You would think with all the attention on government waste and cronyism, the first perk to go would be municipal employees' take-home cars. But it took a Local 10 investigation to put the brakes on Miami-Dade County's fleet.

We learned hundreds of county cars went home every night for no apparent business reason.

The fleet cost taxpayers $8 million a year in gas, insurance and maintenance. It's hard to imagine a more abusive waste of public money.

The new mayor has promised to review every take-home car, and to date, dozens have been revoked, saving taxpayers millions. We wonder, what took so long?
