Youngest teen in Miami robbery could be charged as adult

Teen suspects accused of robbing teens as they got off school bus

MIAMIThe youngest of four teenagers accused of robbing two other teens as they got off a school bus could be charged as an adult.

A Miami-Dade County juvenile judge ordered that the 14-year-old boy remain in jail until his next hearing Dec. 8.

Miami police said he, along with Raul Diaz, Gilberto Baez-Cruz, both 17, and a 15-year-old boy, were in a stolen Honda Accord when they approached the victims as they got off a school bus.

Police said the suspects demanded everything the teens had, including their Nike Air Jordan shoes. Police said one of the suspects implied he had a gun, but the victims were able to get away and find help.

None of the 14-year-old boy's family members were in court as he faced the judge.

"Who do you live with?" the judge asked.

"My father," the boy replied.

"All right, does your father know you're in court today?" the judge asked.

"Yeah, he just couldn't make it," the boy answered.

The 14-year-old suspect has made headlines before. Police said in 2014 the teen, who was 12 at the time, stole a red Pontiac and crashed into a scooter because he couldn't reach the car pedals.

All four teens face charges of strong-arm robbery. Prosecutors are considering whether to charge the 14-year-old as an adult.

"The state has announced its intent to review the case for direct file, which means the state is considering filing charges in the adult court instead of the juvenile court," the judge said. "Do you understand?"

"Yes," the teen answered.

"All right, do you have any questions?" the judge said.

"No," the teen replied.

"All right, good luck to you," the judge told him.
