Remembrance dinner to be held to honor Trayvon Martin

Martin would have turned 18 this week

MIAMI – Civil rights activists Reverend Al Sharpton and Reverend Jesse L. Jackson will join the Trayvon Martin Foundation in honoring the teenager's life during a remembrance dinner Sunday night.

The inaugural dinner is the final event in a week of ceremonies to remember the teenager, who would have turned 18 on February 5th.

On Tuesday, supporters gathered outside a Sanford courthouse with "Happy Birthday" signs. A community peace walk was also held Saturday at the Ives Estates Park in Miami.

The dinner will benefit the Trayvon Martin Foundation, an organization formed in Martin's honor after he was shot and killed in Sanford last February. According to its website, the foundation seeks to amend Florida's Stand Your Ground law. George Zimmerman, the man charged in Martin's death, has said he acted in self-defense when he killed the teenager.

It will be held at the DoubleTree Miami Airport Hotel at 711 NW 72nd Avenue in Miami. Doors open at 5 p.m. before the dinner gets underway at 6 p.m.

Tickets for general seating range from $75 to $125. Parties of ten can also reserve tables for between $750 and $1,250. For more information on how to order tickets or tables, click here
