Is it true that chocolate is bad for animals?

Yes.  Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound which, when consumed can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, seizures, respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest.

What about milk chocolate?  I thought only dark and baking chocolates were a problem.

Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain higher amounts of theobromine and are therefore more dangerous than milk or white chocolate.  However, the higher fat and sugar contents of lighter chocolates can lead to gastro-intestinal upset, or even more severe conditions such as pancreatitis.

Are there any other goodies I shouldn't give my pets as treats?

Certain types of nuts, such as walnuts and macadamias are very dangerous for our pets.  Since the size and shape of nuts make them difficult to digest, it is best to avoid feeding them altogether.
