South Florida Republicans To Reconsider Economic Rescue Plan

Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said Wednesday she is willing to look for a compromise in the $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan. Ros-Lehtinen and fellow House Republicans Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart voted against the rescue plan Monday.

The U.S. Senate will vote on a revised version of the plan Wednesday night. During a campaign stop in her southwest Miami-Dade County district Wednesday, Ros-Lehtinen indicated she has softened her opposition to the plan.

"All the items like unemployment and disability and food stamps, etc., that they are discussing in the Senate are things that I am in favor of," Ros-Lehtinen said.

She went on to say, "We need to pass something. We need to stabilize the markets. We need to ease the credit crunch. We need to have people be able to get a loan. But always keep in mind that the bottom line is it's the middle class struggling families who we want to help."

Ros-Lehtinen said if the revised bill protects those people then she is willing to support it.

Late in the day, Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart also said he is also willing to reconsider the new version of the bill. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart has not yet said if he will do the same.

The House of Representatives reconvenes on Thursday to vote on the rescue plan.
