MIAMI -- An 8-year old Venezuelan boy needs three urgent eye procedures or the boy will go blind, doctors said.Alfred Cardenas has been diagnosed with bilateral microphthalmia-scelerocornea and glaucoma in both eyes. The International Kids Fund is hoping the community can help them raise $40,000 for the expensive surgeries that will save Alfred's eye sight.
The boy has the possibility of recovering some of his vision if he undergoes three urgent procedures, doctors said.He will first have to undergo a valve bypass in which he will receive a glaucoma shunt that will help drain fluid from his eyes. He will also have a retinal vitreous surgery that will push his retina back against the wall of the eye. Lastly, he will need to receive a corneal transplant in which his damaged cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue, according to doctors at Jackson Memorial Medical Center.Alfred does not have medical insurance and his family cannot afford the operation, Jackson Memorial Medical Center officials said. Since the boy is not a resident of the United States, the Holtz Children's Hospital at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center cannot use taxpayer's money to fund his procedure, hospital officials said.Instead, his medical care will be offered to IKF at "charitable rates."Here's information to help Cardenas:International Kids Fund
