13-year-old girl makes name on gridiron

Jaquisha Thomas plays defensive end for South Miami Grey Ghosts

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – A 13-year-old girl is making a name for herself on the football field.

Jaquisha Thomas plays defensive end for the South Miami Grey Ghosts. She is now getting recruited to join other teams.

"He was like, 'If you come out here, you can have any number you want, any position,'" she said. "And I was like, 'I don't want any position. I want to earn it.'"

Thomas also plays basketball and runs track. Her least favorite sport is cheerleading.

"It's boring and you always have to wear make up and stuff," she said, "but boys can just throw on their helmets and go about [their] business."

"She's out to prove a male-dominated sport wrong and, watch our world, you might see her," said Johnny Zegler.

"They be like, 'Oh, I didn't know she could hit that hard,'" said Thomas. "You got to be tough enough. You got to show these boys that you're not easy to get down."

Last week, Lauren Silberman became the first woman to participate in a regional scouting combine sponsored by the NFL. She bowed out early because of a leg injury.
