A top NCAA executive says the governing body deserves some of the criticism it has been peppered with lately while trying to run the "messy and complex business" of college sports.

Executive committee Chairwoman Lou Anna K. Simon said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday that the botched probe of Miami's football team should lead to change.

Simon says it is legitimate to question who is overseeing the NCAA's enforcement staff. She says people within the organization create walls to make sure investigations aren't being controlled by the executive office.

The NCAA has acknowledged it can't use some findings in the Miami probe because investigators working the case obtained information through depositions taken under subpoenas. The NCAA doesn't have subpoena power.
