Give me Philbin
Will Manso Speaks His Mind
The Dolphins have narrowed their coaching search to three final candidates, but in my eyes, they need to focus on just one: Joe Philbin.
The Packers offensive coordinator was not the best choice available when this process started, but it's becoming clear, he's the best choice now. Philbin has been the OC in Green Bay since 2007, and in every season, the Packers have finished in the top 10 in the league in points and yards. I know he didn't call the team's plays, head coach Mike McCarthy handled that, but he has extensive knowledge of the offense. That's the type of dynamic offense Miami is missing.
Philbin could also help bring Packers back-up QB Matt Flynn to town. He's a free agent and has worked under all-pro Aaron Rodgers over the last few seasons. He'll command some big money, but Flynn may end up being the Dolphins best option for a QB.
The alternative is making a huge move in the draft to move up into the first three picks. I have no problem with that, but I'm not sure Stephen Ross and Jeff Ireland are ready to make that sacrifice.
As for Philbin, he's paid his dues and, if the Dolphins don't hire him, he'll likely get one of the other NFL head coaching openings. The point is, Miami needs to make a move. All the "big name" coaches are gone, and Philbin could represent the best option for the Dolphins to turn things around.
Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is also intriguing, while current interim head coach Todd Bowles is the safest choice.
In the end, I think I can speak for all fans by saying, give me something different. Philbin would represent that. Count me in for a vote.
