The Florida Panthers selected defenseman Michael Matheson in the first round Friday night. The Southeast Division champions selected the Quebec native with the 23rd pick.

Matheson played in the USHL in 2011-2012. He led Dubuque defenseman with 27 points (11-16).

The 18-year-old is committed to Boston College for the fall of 2012.
