Panthers take season series from Miami

The FIU Panthers celebrate Wednesday night's win against the Hurricanes.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami held a one run lead in the ninth inning, but Florida International University rallied for two runs in the top of the frame to earn a dramatic win, 5-4, in this crosstown showdown.

J.C. Escarra provided the go-ahead RBI with a base hit to right field that allowed the runner from second to score on a close play at home.

"It was a disappointing loss," Miami head coach Jim Morris said. "We were ahead there at the end and we normally win when we're ahead at the end."

Miami closer Frankie Bartow (1-3) blew the save for the first time all season.

FIU reliever Michael Agis (1-2) pitched the final 4.1 innings of the game to earn the win.

The victory gave the Panthers (26-17) a 3-1 series victory against the Hurricanes (20-21), who fell below .500 and are fighting to keep their 44-year postseason run alive.
