CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes running back Gus Edwards will transfer from the school.

A redshirt junior, Edwards rushed for 977 yards and 12 touchdowns in 35 games over the past three seasons. Edwards missed the entire 2015 season with a foot injury.

"Gus indicated to me that he would like to explore the possibility of other opportunities to continue his football career and we have given him permission to do that," Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt said.

The Palm Beach Post reports Edwards, a Staten Island, New York, native, unofficially announced his decision after Miami's victory in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

Edwards reportedly used Snapchat to declare the bowl was his last game as a Hurricanes football player.

Edwards is the second running back to leave the school since the new year. Joe Yearby announced Jan. 3 that he was declaring for the NFL draft.

His departure all but ensures that Mark Walton will be the featured back in 2017. Walton led the team in rushing last season, amassing 1,117 yards and 14 touchdowns on his way to earning third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors.
