Hurricanes suspend 7 players for Russell Athletic Bowl

Michael Irvin II among those who did not travel to Orlando

MIAMI – The University of Miami will be without seven players for the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando.

Team spokesman Tom Symonds said Saturday that seven players did not travel with the team to Orlando "for failing to meet the standards of expectations set by the program."

The suspended players are tight end Michael Irvin II (son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin), receiver O'Juan Carney, tight end Jovani Haskins, defensive back Jeff James Jr., defensive lineman Tyreic Martin, defensive lineman Gerald Willis and defensive back Cedrick Wright.

Head coach Mark Richt said it was his way of sending a message to the players.

"It's a message to them and to the other guys that we're going to do things right around here," Richt said. "It'll be a one-game deal."

The Hurricanes (8-4) will play West Virginia (10-2) on Wednesday at Camping World Stadium.
