Hurricanes defense beats UM offense 24-16 in final spring action

No 'clear leader' emerges in search for new starting QB

BOCA RATON, Fla. – With the final spring scrimmage completed on Saturday, the University of Miami Hurricanes will have to wait until the fall to see if a clear leader emerges in the quarterback competition for the right to step into the cleats of Brad Kaaya, who left as the school's all-time leading passer.

The co-No. 1s remain Malik Rosier and Evan Shirreffs, that is until dual-threat freshman N'Kosi Perry arrives on campus next month.

Rosier threw two touchdowns in Saturday's final spring scrimmage -- one to tight end Chris Herndon and another to wide receiver Ahmmon Richards. However, Rosier also finished with two interceptions, including a pick six to Malek Young. Rosier had 8 completions on 18 pass attempts with 169  passing yards and those two touchdowns and two picks.

Shirreffs stat line was less impressive: just 75 passing yards and one interception with 7 completions on 17 pass attempts.

"I did not expect a clear leader when it was done," Richt said. "But I'd have been OK with it. But I think we're right about where we thought we were."

"A little disappointing the offense, No. 1 offense," Richt added. "(They) had a shot to at least tie the game at the very end and, of course, we took a sack. That we don't like."

The scrimmage was held at Boca Raton Community High School, Richt's alma mater.

Jack Allinson, working with the second unit, had 12 completions on 16 pass attempts for 104 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

"The quarterbacks are all improving," Richards said. "They're all trying to lead us. It's just going to come down to the wire, who's going to lead this team."

The defense won the game on the strength of forcing turnovers that included four interceptions and at least two fumbles.
