Miami's comeback attempt falls short

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The offense for the 16th-ranked University of Miami Hurricanes stalled in the sun and then in the rain as they fell to the North Carolina Tar Heels, 20-13 on Saturday.

It's the second straight home loss for the 'Canes, who dropped a heartbreaker to FSU last week, 20-19.

The 'Canes had a chance to tie the game as they had the ball late in the fourth quarter, down only seven points, but UM quarterback Brad Kaaya was hit hard, forcing a fumble. The Tar Heels recovered the ball, which sealed the win for UNC.

UM kicker Michael Badgley made a 22 yard field goal in the fourth quarter that cut the UNC lead to 20-13.

Rain started pouring down in the fourth quarter as Mark Walton was hurt on a 4th-and-one run. 

Walton limped off the field, but returned to the game.

Joseph Yearby scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cut the UNC lead to 20-10. 

Kaaya was sacked on the last play of the first half as the boos rained down on the 'Canes, who trailed 20-3 at the break.

UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw a 1-yard touchdown to Ryan Switzer for a 20-3 lead in the second quarter.

Tar Heels kicker Nick Weiler hit a 52-yard field goal for a 13-3 lead in the second quarter. 

The 'Canes didn't get on the board until 13:39 in the second quarter, when Michael Badgley made a 47-yard field goal that had UM trailing 10-3.

Trubisky threw a 5-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give UNC a 10-0 lead.

The 'Canes had previously allowed no points in the first quarter this season, but the Tar Heels had no problems putting up points against UM in the first stanza on Saturday.

UNC threatened on its first drive of the game, but the 'Canes defense held, forcing Weiler to kick an early field goal for an early 3-0 lead. 

The 'Canes failed to tie the game when the Tar Heels blocked a Michael Badgley field-goal attempt later in the first quarter.
