MIAMI - Marlins ace Jose Fernandez won the National League's Rookie of the Year award on Monday.
Fernandez, 21, was dominant for the Marlins despite playing for a 100 loss team.
Fernandez finished with a 12-6 record and an impressive 2.19 ERA.
The Cuban defector brought energy and excitement to a franchise in desperate need of a jump start.
Fernandez told Local 10 "it means a whole lot. I don't think it only means a lot to me, it means a lot to the people that have been there the whole year and to the fans down in Miami. I think that you know, it means a lot to us."
Fernandez finished first in the voting, fellow Cuban defector Yasiel Puig finished second.
Fernandez said, "That's really important. You know, he's got a lot of great talent. The other guy Miller, they all have good talent, but I mean it's just, it's good that a lot of Cuban players are coming and playing and I'm doing well in the big leagues. That makes me proud."
