Florida State to meet Mercer in first game of Tallahassee regional

Seminoles also host Auburn, College of Charleston as No. 1 seed

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State captured its sixth Atlantic Coast Conference crown Sunday, but it wasn't enough to give the Seminoles a top national seed in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

The NCAA announced Monday the entire 64-team field for the tournament, but Florida State was not among the top eight schools.

Florida State entered the ACC tournament on a five-game losing streak, but the Seminoles (41-19) went 4-0 en route to winning the championship. It may have been their disappointing finish to the regular season that kept the Seminoles from securing a national seed.

Still, the Seminoles earned the No. 1 seed in the Tallahassee regional.

"We are excited to still be playing," FSU head coach Mike Martin said. "We know we have our work cut out for us."

Joining FSU in the Tallahassee regional are No. 2 seed College of Charleston (43-13), No. 3 seed Auburn (35-24) and No. 4 seed Mercer (35-21).

The Seminoles, who are making their 38th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, will meet Mercer first in the double-elimination regional Friday.

"We remember what happened last year (when the Seminoles were swept in the Tallahassee regional at home)," Martin said. "Obviously, we want to player better. We want to get better every day. We look forward to playing a very good Mercer team on Friday night."

FSU last met Mercer in 2006 and leads the all-time series at 58-8. This will be the first meeting in the postseason.
