Marlins president David Samson has been called a lot of things, and not all of them have been very nice, but Samson is doing a very nice thing this week.
Samson helped organize an event called "Run to Honor the Workers" and it will take place on Friday.
The always talkative Samson will let his feet do the talking to help raise over a half-million dollars for 10 different charities to honor the construction workers from Marlins Park.
Samson will run an unbelievable 52.5 miles in one day! Yes, it sounds crazy, but for those who don't know, Samson is an avid runner. He's run many marathons and this is what's called an "ultra" marathon. Basically, it's two marathons in one.
I went out earlier this week for a training day with Samson and we ran three miles together. He spent the entire time explaining to me how he came up with the concept.
100% if the money raised will be donated to 10 charities. Those charities were selected by the handful of people who have donated big money to the cause.
The 10 charities confirmed to be receiving money are:
Jewish Federation of Broward County
Stand Up To Cancer
Challenged Athletes Foundation
ALS Recovery Fund
Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
The Miami Foundation - Miami Fellows Scholarships
Miami Children's Hospital
University of Miami Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research
Liga Contra el Cancer
The first leg of the run will start at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and AIA in Pompano Beach and conclude at home plate of Marlins Park prior to the 7:10 PM Marlins- Diamondbacks game.
The run will consist of five-mile intervals dedicated to a specific Charity of Choice, with a runner representing that specific charity joining Samson for the five-mile leg.
Say what you want about Samson, but this is a great effort that's taken him over six months to put together. He's trained every day and literally put in hundreds of miles over that time to prepare.
If interested, you can still help to the cause. Pledges can be made at www.marlins.com/samsonrun. Log on to the site and select one of 10 charities and the amount of the donation. If you have any questions about your donation please e-mail email@example.com.
