MLS says there is deadline on a Miami deal

TORONTO, CANADA ā€“ The commissioner of Major League Soccer says the clock is ticking on David Beckham and the possibility of the MLS returning to South Florida.

In his State of the League address before Saturday's MLS Cup, Commissioner Don Garber admitted that time is running short for Beckham's group.

"There is a deadline on the Miami deal," Garber said. "I'm not going to share that deadline, it's an agreement we have with David and Simon (Fuller)."

Since announcing in 2014 his intentions to bring the MLS back to Miami, Beckham has struggled to have a MLS-only stadium built.

Various locations for the stadium were shot down until a plot of land near Marlins Park in Overtown was deemed acceptable.

However, Beckham has not spoken about the status of his prospective team in over a year.

Despite the silence, Garber says the MLS would still like to return to South Florida as the league's 24th team.

"As you see how teams evolve in certain markets, and the challenges of getting stadiums built," Garber added. "We try to do everything we can to ensure that we have the right recipe for success as we're building clubs that we'd like to be there for the rest of time."
