Panthers to honor Fernandez in season opener

Team to wear jersey number of Marlins pitcher during warm-ups

SUNRISE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers will honor the late Jose Fernandez before tonight's season opener vs. New Jersey.

Every Panthers player will wear a jersey with Fernandez's name and number during pre-game warm-ups at the BB&T Center.

The team will also wear helmet stickers with the number 16 during the game against the Devils.

Fernandez and two others were killed Sept. 25 when their boat hit a jetty off Miami Beach.

A star with the Marlins, Fernandez was a big fan of South Florida's other pro and college teams.

The Miami Hurricanes honored the former Marlins pitcher with a helmet sticker during their win over Georgia Tech, while the Miami Heat wore shooting shirts with Fernandez's initials and numbers before Tuesday's pre-season game vs. Brooklyn.
