Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was cited for shoplifting crab legs from Publix.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, was first reported by Tomahawk Nation.
The current Heisman Trophy winner was cited after ordering $32 worth of food from the supermarket and leaving without paying for the items. Video captured Winston in the store and leaving the store without paying.
The Leon County Sheriff's Office traveled to Winston's home in Tallahassee. Maj. Michael Wood said that after Winston was contacted by deputies at his apartment, he said he had forgotten to pay.
"In a post-Miranda interview he did in fact acknowledge he had left Publix without paying for the items" said Maj. Woods. "He indicated to the deputies he had forgotten and when he got home he realized he had not paid, but he in fact made no effort to contact Publix or return to pay prior to the Deputy's arrival."
Winston was not charged with a crime. If he completes a community service program, no misdemeanor charges will be filed.
The Florida State baseball team has indefinitely suspended Winston. He is a relief pitcher.
Winston, 20, was investigated last year when a fellow Florida State student reported that he raped her. But prosecutors said there wasn't enough evidence to charge him.
In a statement Wednesday, Winston said he made "a terrible mistake" and takes full responsibility for his actions. He called it "a moment of youthful ignorance."
