MIAMI – A boxing gym at Tropical Park will be renamed for the late Muhammad Ali, who made Miami his home-away-from-home.

Miami-Dade County's Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department announced Thursday that Tropical Park's boxing gym will be renamed the Muhammad Ali Boxing Center during a July 14 ceremony.

"I am thrilled to see the Tropical Park boxing center named after the great Muhammad Ali," Commissioner Javier Souto said in a statement. "I was privileged to have met the man in person and behold his many boxing victories. He was bigger than life and an inspiration to all. His memory will live on at this center as it grooms future generations of boxers."

The three-time heavyweight boxing champion died June 3 at the age of 74.

Ali regularly trained at Miami Beach's famed 5th Street Gym. It was during his time in Miami that he announced that he was changing his birth name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali.
